BRIAN KAVANAGH

Image
Today, we welcome Brian Kavanagh along to The Comedian's Conscience. Within his first year of comedy, he's gigged all over, including some of Scotland's most famous clubs, gaining him a slot at The Glee Club. Always trying out new material, this has led to him announcing a solo show, Hindsight, to premiere at Vibe Room Comedy Club on 25th November! Great to see you, pal! Let's get right into it, what made you want to get into stand-up?  Being a funny fucker... No, I had always been “the funny one” in my group, from school to work and later years. I just never thought of doing anything with it or that it was something I could have used as a job or career etc. I'm very impulsive and If it had crossed my mind at 18 or whatever to try stand-up, I would definitely have done it. Sadly though it never crossed my mind until I was sitting in the midst of lockdown stoned out my mind, and that was that, I went for it, and haven't looked back since. Your style is very conve

CHELSEA YOUNG

Today, we welcome rising star to the comedy scene, Chelsea Young. Having been an avid fan of stand-up comedy her whole life, her career thus far has led her to perform all around Scotland and quickly becoming a favorite act to watch.  Great to have you here, pal! Thanks so much, let's crack right on with it. What made you want to get into stand-up comedy? I was always really into stand-up comedy as a kid (I have an older brother who introduced me to people like Rhod Gilbert when I was a kid) and wanted to give it a go just once as a confidence-building exercise, as I was really shy growing up. I did my first open mic in November 2021 and just absolutely fell in love with being on stage performing, so decided to carry it on. Your career so far in the industry has been nothing short of incredible, gigging all over the country, how do you manage to stay motivated whilst balancing a day job?  I think I sort of have the mentality of 'I don't HAVE to do standup, I GET to do stan

MICK McNEILL

Today, we welcome rising comedy star Mick McNeill to the blog. A comedy club favourite who's performed at weekend slots and headlined in clubs all over Scotland and ran two shows at 2022's Edinburgh Fringe.  Thanks so much for doing this man, let’s get right into it. What made you want to get into stand up? Happy to do it! I'd always loved making people laugh but hadn’t thought much about it until I was 28. My friend asked me to do a filmmaking class with him, it wasn’t great and after that I did a screenwriting one which was something I’d always had interest in being a huge film lover. I didn’t find that I was great at that either. The teacher said there was a comedy writing class next semester so I thought I’d try that thinking it would be just scripts. There were a couple weeks where he got us to write and read out a stand-up routine for the class and I wrote mine in about half an hour in work before the class thinking it was terrible. When I got to the class I read it

KYLE SAMUEL and PETER BELL

Kyle Samuel and Peter Bell are two new acts to the Scottish comedy scene, who have not only performed all over the country, but run two new nights within Glasgow. These are the open mic Lol'Sa, which takes place in Soulsa Bar in the Merchant City, and the monthly Sauchiehall Comedy Club which currently takes place in Nice N' Sleazy every month, with the next one happening on November 9th.  Thanks for doing this lads, let's get right into it. What made you want to get into stand-up comedy?  Kyle: I was a bit of a class clown at school, and getting that first laugh is a great feeling. I’ve been chasing the dragon ever since. Always been a fan of stand-up, and always wanted to give it a try but put it off due to fears of being terrible at it. But, when the lockdown hit I decided that if I didn’t at least give it a go I would regret it.  Peter: I tried learning a lot as a kid to try and make pals cause I thought folk would find that interesting. Turns out primary ones are more

MARK BLACK

Our first guest will be Mark Black, a comedian who's made the rounds with not only his stand-up but featuring in online videos with his brother Paul, selling out shows at The Fringe and Oran Mor. Mark debuted his own hour 'Chindiana Jones' at 2022's Edinburgh Fringe under the Gilded Balloon banner, and we're honored to have him speak with us about what got him here and bringing his show to Glasgow on December 30th at the Classic Grand.  Hey man! Thanks for being here, we’ll get right into it. What made you want to get into stand-up? Speaking of comedy in general. I suppose by watching a lot of comedy growing up. Sketch shows, sitcoms, cartoons, and stand-up. However, stand-up was always the most fascinating to me. The idea that someone could have a whole room of people fits of uncontrollable laughter just by saying crazy shit in their head, out loud. I wanted to know what that sensation was like. That wall of laughter from strangers. Writing jokes and thinking of fu
